Vaginismus is a fairly common problem in which the muscles at the entrance to the vagina tighten-up and make penetration almost impossible and certainly painful.
Medical Research records that is almost invariably (but not in ALL cases, there are physical causes too) due to psychological issues, often occurring after some sort of relationship distress.
It is not uncommon for women to be affected for many years as sexual problems often tend not to be dealt with due to the embarrassment of talking about it with somebody.
Vaginismus is most commonly found in ladies in their late teens to early thirties and can have a seriously debilitating effect on relationships and self-esteem.
What can cause Vaginismus?
For most sufferers of Vaginismus the cause is Psychological, often this can be negative childhood experiences, such as the attitude to sex by parents, sometimes it can be due to a difficult child birthing experience.
Despite the Psychological cause, the vagina muscles tightening making penetration almost impossible can become an unconscious reflex that sufferers can do little about.
Sometimes the first sexual encounter can be painful or very negative and can result in this “defensive” reflex.
Often it can be caused by nothing more than just negative talk or messages that go around in early youth and it is not uncommon to find that problems within a relationship can also give rise to Vaginismus.
Can Vaginismus be treated?
Vaginismus is principally a psychological problem rather than a physiological one but not exclusively.
If you are suffering from this problem is is very important to visit your GP or health-care specialist who can confirm or rule-out any biological problems prior to consulting for therapy.
Types of Therapy available for Vaginismus
We offer both Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy based solutions for Vaginismus – choosing the right type of therapy for Vaginismus probably has more to do with you and your personality type rather than which form of therapy is more effective, so if you are in any doubt you can always arrange to come along for one of our low cost (£30) initial consultations and we will advise you based on which therapy we think is most suited to YOU.
Hypnotherapy for Vaginismus
Hypnotherapy can be particularly effective for helping people to locate and then use many of their own inner strengths and resources to combat the problems associated with Vaginismus.
In this respect, hypnotherapy helps a person to ‘help themselves’ in very much the same way as other therapeutic approaches.
Taking anywhere between 6 and 10 sessions, hypnotherapy for Vaginismus involves understanding how your earlier experiences, core beliefs and values have played a role in forming and reinforcing your phobia.
Hypnosis itself is very relaxing and allows you to explore memories and experiences related to your Vaginismus that you might want to re-think in order to produce more positive responses and outcomes.
Hypnotherapy for Young Adults
Research into 18–25-year-olds seeking therapy found that there are a number of barriers to help-seeking including difficulty identifying the problem, concerns about stigma, preference for self-reliance and uncertainty about where to go for help.
At Wolverhampton Hypnotherapy we have developed two distinct pathways to address these specific limitations, firstly a page dedicated to hypnotherapy for young adults and secondly, a page outlining how parents can help their son or daughter access therapy without taking-over or imposing the need for therapy upon them.
