Understanding Self-Confidence Problems

When a person believes in themselves and their abilities to succeed in life we describe them as “being full of self-confidence”.

People with high self-confidence tend to have certain characteristics associated with them such as the ability to be:

  • Successful in their chosen career
  • Highly sociable
  • Popular with others
  • Unruffled by problems
  • Un-phased by illnesses
  • Relaxed

Many people will experience low self-confidence at some point in our lives and this is a perfectly normal experience to have, but there are some people whose entire lives seem to be experienced with these feelings, often expressed as feeling “not good enough” and for them, life can be challenging on a daily basis.

It could be, for example, that they do not feel good enough to mix with people and so become socially withdrawn, or perhaps the idea of going for a job interview seems so pointless as they already “know” that they aren’t good enough for the job and so what’s the point in attending.

Here at the Wolverhampton Hypnotherapy Clinic we often refer to this as “predicting the future” (or anticipatory anxiety) and this is a common theme with people suffering in this way!

(It is, of course, impossible to predict the future and any attempt to do so invariably leads to disappointment).

People who lack self confidence and suffer from low self-esteem have been shown to also suffer from a high degree of social anxiety and in fact, there is a known correlation between low self-esteem (not confident about your own abilities) and high social anxiety. (The degree to which you worry about being judged by other people).

The more social anxiety you suffer, the more low self-confidence you experience whilst conversely, the more confident you feel the lower your social anxiety.

What causes low self-confidence?

There are a large number of things that can lead to low self confidence, but as far as we are concerned they probably fall into two main categories:

  1. Some sort of negative or emotional experience that has taken place, normally where you failed to live up to some “standard” and felt, or were made to feel, embarrassed or “small” as a consequence. It is particularly important to note that this “standard” which was not achieved may be real, or simply imagined.
  2. The slow development, over time, of negative or un-helpful thinking patterns that start to impact more widely on the way you feel about yourself. We call this a “cognitive distortion” and it is well known that thoughts actually directly affect feelings. In other words the “way you think” determines the “way you feel”.

These thinking styles can self-reinforce and lead into a downward spiral of low self confidence that gets worse over time.

Improving Self-Confidence with Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool that can assist individuals in discovering and harnessing their inner strengths and resources to address issues related to confidence.

By facilitating self-help in a manner similar to other therapeutic methods, hypnotherapy for self-confidence promotes personal growth.

Typically requiring between six and ten sessions, it focuses on how past experiences, core beliefs, and values contribute to self-belief challenges.

The relaxing nature of hypnosis provides a safe space to revisit and reassess memories and experiences connected to your self-perception, enabling you to foster more positive responses and outcomes.

Self-Confidence Hypnotherapy for Young Adults

Research into 18–25-year-olds seeking therapy found that there are a number of barriers to help-seeking including difficulty identifying the problem, concerns about stigma, preference for self-reliance and uncertainty about where to go for help.

At Wolverhampton Hypnotherapy we have developed two distinct pathways to address these specific limitations, firstly a page dedicated to hypnotherapy for young adults and secondly, a page outlining how parents can help their son or daughter access therapy without taking-over or imposing the need for therapy upon them.

Testimonial from Mr. D. Wolverhampton

I met Joan when I decided I need to strengthen my self confidence which was playing an important factor in my life that time.

Hypnosis sessions with Joan helped me to accept the past and all difficulties I went through when I was a child and when my confidence and character were forming.

Also, Joan advised me how to relax and work with myself in my free time which became the most important part in my personal development.

I can recommend hypnosis sessions with Joan for anyone who want to change something in his life or is going through difficult times.

Hypnosis, in conjunction with Joan’s experience can make a real difference in one’s life!
