Anxious woman pulling her hair

Hair Pulling, or Trichotillomania, is a condition where a person feels compelled to pull their hair out.

Sufferers may pull out the hair on their head or in other places, such as their eyebrows or eyelashes.

Hair pulling is a psychological condition where the person is unable to stop themselves carrying out a particular action and they will usually experience an intense urge to pull their hair out becoming more and more agitated until they do.

After pulling out hair, they’ll feel a sense of relief.

Hair pulling can lead to negative feelings, such as guilt and the sufferer may also feel embarrassed or ashamed about pulling their hair out, and may try to deny it or cover it up.

It can often make the person feel unattractive and can lead to low self-esteem.

Hair pulling tends to affect girls more than boys and it tends be be prevalent in younger girls.

What causes it?

It’s not known what causes hair pulling, but as always, there are several theories.

Some experts think hair pulling is a type of addiction. The more you pull your hair out, the more you want to keep doing it.

Psychological and behavioural theories suggest that hair pulling may be a way of relieving stress or anxiety and in some cases, trichotillomania may be a form of self-harm, where the person deliberately injures themselves as a way of seeking temporary relief from emotional distress.

Therapy for Hair Pulling in Wolverhampton

Hypnotherapy is supported by scientific research evidence that demonstrates how helpful Hypnosis can be, although it is important to understand that not everybody will benefit from treatment.

Psychological counselling therapies such as CBT help you to deal with hair pulling problems by addressing your ‘belief systems’ which can lead you to feeling ‘powerless’ to stop carrying out these behaviours.

By changing your thoughts and perceptions you can learn to overcome the problem yourself.

How Many Sessions of Therapy will I Need?

Whilst its really impossible to be prescriptive about the number of sessions required, it is unlikely that you will solve the problem in just a single session.
