Flying Confidence – Overcoming Fear and Building Calm

Fear of flying is extremely common, and it’s not about being ‘brave enough’ — it’s about how the body and mind respond to perceived danger. With understanding, support, and practical tools, you can manage anxiety, feel calm, and enjoy flying with confidence.

This six-session integrative programme provides a supportive space for individuals who experience fear of flying, whether mild anxiety or intense phobia.

Fear of flying (also known as aviophobia) stems from an overactive nervous system and heightened threat response, which can trigger freeze, flight, fight, or fawn reactions.

This course helps you understand your fear, regulate your nervous system, retrain anxious responses, and build confidence, resilience, and control.

Blending counselling, coaching, somatic techniques, and hypnotherapy, the course offers practical strategies to manage anxiety before, during, and after flights.

Sessions are flexible to suit your situation: whether you have an upcoming flight or want to prepare in advance, the programme meets you where you are, at a pace that feels safe and empowering.

What Can Cause a Fear of Flying?

Numerous factors can contribute to the development of a fear of flying, often rooted in personal experiences, psychological predispositions, or even societal influences.

A traumatic event related to aviation, such as turbulence during a previous flight or witnessing an accident, can instil a lasting fear.

Additionally, the sensation of losing control while in the air can trigger anxiety in those who prefer to feel secure in their surroundings.

The influence of media portrayals that highlight flying disasters can also amplify fears, making the idea of flying seem perilous.

For some, a predisposition to anxiety or phobias can lead to an exaggerated response to the unfamiliar experiences associated with air travel.

Understanding these underlying causes is the first step towards overcoming them, paving the way for individuals to reclaim their confidence and enjoy the freedom that flying offers.

Programme Structure: Six Supportive Sessions

psychological counselling session

Session 1 – Understanding Your Fear of Flying

  • Explore experiences, triggers, and severity using SUDs (0–10 scale)
  • Psychoeducation on fear, anxiety, and the nervous system, including freeze, flight, fight, and fawn responses
  • Introduce somatic awareness: noticing tension, grounding, and body regulation

Session 2 – Nervous System Regulation & Calm in the Body

  • Somatic exercises, breathwork, and relaxation techniques to regulate anxiety
  • Introduction to cognitive strategies to manage “what if” thoughts and catastrophic thinking
  • Gentle hypnotherapy to calm subconscious anxiety patterns

Session 3 – Confidence, Self-Esteem & Emotional Resilience

  • Strengthen self-trust and emotional regulation
  • Hypnotherapy or guided visualisation to reinforce calm and control
  • Coaching and counselling techniques to challenge unhelpful beliefs about flying

Session 4 – Exposure Preparation & Simulation

  • Gradual exposure: imagining airport, take off, turbulence, landing
  • Pair exposure with somatic regulation and calm focus
  • Guided imagery exercises
  • Consolidate tools learned in sessions 1–3

Sessions 5 & 6 – Flexible Flight-Focused Support

  • Used either before a booked flight or as additional reinforcement for general flying confidence
  • Includes practical application: airport procedures, boarding, in-flight anxiety management
  • Further hypnotherapy, somatic exercises, or coaching as needed
  • Support for integrating strategies into real-life travel situations

This flexibility allows the programme to be tailored: whether you want to practice and build confidence ahead of a flight or use the sessions when a flight is scheduled, the approach remains supportive, structured, and empowering.
