Nosophobia has become more prevalent as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020.

Because the behavioural scientists advising the UK government argued for the need to reduce social interaction to minimise infection, many of the messages were necessarily ‘harsh’ in promoting the message that infection is ‘rife’.
There is little surprise, therefore, that the far of becoming infected (with Covid-19) has increased dramatically.
Nosophobia Symptoms
The symptoms of Nosophobia as well as many other specific phobias are as follows:
- Feelings of panic, dread or terror
- A recognition that the fear goes beyond normal boundaries and is generally disproportionate
- Nosophobia reactions are generally automatic and uncontrollable and can seem to take over a person’s thoughts
- Rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling, tightening of the stomach muscles and an overwhelming desire to escape the situation—all the physical reactions associated with extreme fear or danger
- Extreme measures taken to avoid the feared object or situation (avoidance behaviours)
Nosophobia may be the result of negative emotional experiences that may be either directly or indirectly linked to the object or situational fear and has usually become “normalised” over a period of time, in other words accepted as a limiting factor in that person’s life – “I’ve learnt to live with it.”
In just as many cases, Nosophobia may have become worse over time as more and more sophisticated avoidance tactics and routines are developed.
The great news is that the vast majority of people suffering Nosophobia do NOT have to suffer without hope.
Almost every phobia responds well to psychological interventions.
If you’d like to find out more about overcoming Nosophobia then why not make an appointment to see us for a Confidential initial consultation.
Hypnotherapy for Nosophobia

Joan offers clinical hypnotherapy for Nosophobia here at our Wolverhampton clinic.
In most cases, overcoming a phobia or fear involves a number of sessions which progressively build over time in order to both challenge existing thinking patterns as well as provide a new set of coping skills.
Although it is impossible to be prescriptive about the number of sessions that any one individual may need, most phobia sufferers will obtain a sustainable resolution over 6 – 10 sessions.
It may be unrealistic to expect to overcome a phobia such as Nosophobia in just one or two sessions, particularly if the phobia has been in existence for a protracted period of time
Hypnotherapy for Young Adults
Research into 18–25-year-olds seeking therapy found that there are a number of barriers to help-seeking including difficulty identifying the problem, concerns about stigma, preference for self-reliance and uncertainty about where to go for help.
At Wolverhampton Hypnotherapy we have developed two distinct pathways to address these specific limitations, firstly a page dedicated to hypnotherapy for young adults and secondly, a page outlining how parents can help their son or daughter access therapy without taking-over or imposing the need for therapy upon them.
Initial Consultations
Joan offers all prospective clients a low cost (£30) initial consultation to discuss your mental health concerns.
