Acrophobia, the fear of heights, affects about 5% of the UK population. All phobias are irrational, yet they trigger genuine feelings of anxiety and stress.
You can find out more about our general approach to hypnotherapy for anxiety in Wolverhampton here.
While outsiders may perceive the fear as silly, those with acrophobia know its impact on their lives is severe and real.
At Wolverhampton Hypnotherapy, we approach your acrophobia with understanding and seriousness.
Psychologists recognise that our minds can produce real biological reactions to perceived dangers, so as long as sufferers believe their fears represent a threat, the fear remains valid.
Many acrophobia sufferers acknowledge their fear is irrational, but awareness alone is insufficient, which is why simply advising someone to snap out of it is rarely effective.
What could cause Acrophobia?
Acrophobia can stem from various experiences that trigger intense feelings of anxiety.
These experiences can include a traumatic event such as falling from a height during childhood, witnessing someone else in distress at a high elevation, or even a panic attack while in a high place that leads to a lasting association between heights and fear.
Additionally, it can develop gradually through a series of negative experiences, such as feeling overwhelmed or anxious on a high balcony or viewing platform, which can create a reinforcing cycle of avoidance and increased fear.
Even common situations like climbing a ladder or being on a tall building can become sources of dread, leading individuals to alter their daily routines to avoid such scenarios altogether, often without realising the impact this has on their quality of life.
Acrophobia Symptoms
The symptoms of Acrophobia are very similar to other specific phobias and will often include:
- Panic attacks
- Inability to Relax
- Feelings of dizziness
- Prickly sensations like pins and needles
- Palpitations
- Aches & Pains
- Dry and Sticky mouth
- Sweating Excessively
- Breathlessness
Acrophobia Symptoms are generally automatic and uncontrollable and can seem to take over a person’s thoughts which frequently leads to extreme measures being taken to avoid the feared object or situation, what are known as “Safety” or “Avoidance” behaviours.
Unfortunately, for the sufferer, these safety behaviours have a paradoxical effect and actually reinforce the phobia rather than solve it!
Acrophobia may be the result of negative emotional experiences that can be either directly or indirectly linked to the object or situational fear.
Over time, the symptoms often become “normalised” and “accepted” as limiting beliefs in that person’s life – “I’ve learnt to live with it.”
In just as many cases, Acrophobia may have become worse over time as more and more sophisticated safety behaviours and routines are developed.
The good news is that the vast majority of people who suffer from Acrophobia will find a course of Psychological Therapy helps enormously.

Hypnotherapy for Acrophobia
Hypnotherapy for Acrophobia can be particularly effective for helping people to locate and then use many of their own inner strengths and resources to combat the problems associated with Acrophobia.
In this respect, hypnotherapy helps a person to ‘help themselves’ in very much the same way as other therapeutic approaches.

CBT challenges the thinking that creates Acrophobia so that you can change the way you feel about heights.
