What is The Thrive Programme?

Rob Kelly’s Thrive is a programme for Changing Limiting Beliefs. It’s a training programme that teaches people how to overcome their problems, symptoms, health-issues and other hurdles in their lives, by managing their thoughts, beliefs, emotions and thinking styles effectively.

Formulation 

A ‘formulation’, is a scientific or psychological explanation – a formula – that describes how a certain process works. It is useful for us to have a formula for Changing Limiting Beliefs, for two reasons:

1. It helps us, the Thrive Consultants, to keep our efforts focused on what is going to help you our clients to achieve your particular goals. 

2. It will help us to gain more credibility and acceptance for The Thrive Programme in the wider psychological community.

Our Formulation: 


Research shows that most – if not all – illnesses, anxieties, depressive disorders, habits, phobias, fears, immune system issues etc have a cognitive (or thinking) component to them. That is to say that the severity of the distress caused by the illness or symptom, the depth of anguish and pain or discomfort experienced by the sufferer, and even the actual illness or symptom itself, may be caused, prolonged or made worse by the way the sufferer
thinks and feels about it.

Methodology

 
Research also shows us that people will only invest their energy, time and commitment to achieving a goal - any goal - once they BELIEVE that their efforts will be successful.

Rob Kelly’s” Thrive programme is a process that allows a person – through guided self-awareness exercises - to understand that they CAN overcome their problems, symptoms, health-issues and other hurdles, by recognising how their own thoughts and beliefs were either causing or contributing to the problems in the first place.

Once the person can clearly identify that their problems are caused (or contributed-to) by them not managing their thinking very well, and they are shown some simple, understandable and predictable techniques that they can use to change their limiting beliefs, they will put in massive and determined effort to achieve their goals because they believe they will be successful. 

The above formula is very similar to a number of other formulas – namely that of CBT (Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy) in which Paul also holds a Diploma.

The main difference between the Changing Limiting Beliefs and CBT, is Changing Limiting Belief’s huge emphasis on the trainee KNOWING and UNDERSTANDING how their mind and body interact:

How their cognitive processes work,

How their belief systems are formed,

how their personality type and their thinking styles interact together,

how their two main limiting belief systems hold them back in life, and

Why their external locus of control has such a big impact upon them!

In short: when a person can fully comprehend how they created a problem, they can “un-create” it.

It is because Thrive trainees are helped to attain this high degree of self-awareness, that they are able to clearly see what they need to do in order to ‘get better’, and why they are then also willing to put in as much effort as is required.

Why not use Hypno Analysis?

A very large number of people who consult us for General Anxiety Disorders either cannot, or do not want to, follow a course of Pure Hypnoanalysis which has a principle objective to help the sufferer uncover bottled-up emotions, usually from their much earlier childhood years. Very often Pure Hypnoanalysis is also not suitable for technical reasons.

A course of the Thrive Programme recognises the fact that sufferers may have emotions bottled up in their past, but seeks to make significant and life altering changes to the fundamental way in which the client sees “the World” and their problems. In this respect it is very similar in concept to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, although The Thrive Programme emphasizes much more fundamental change than CBT.

We have found that for many clients, a combination of Pure Hypnoanalysis and a follow-up of the Thrive Programme can have an even greater impact on them!

 

So how can Thrive Consultant & Psychotherapist Paul Lee at the Wolverhampton Hypnotherapy Clinic help resolve this and other similar problems?

 

This program of sessions is called "The Thrive Programme" and uses the Rob Kelly Technique. Paul has been specifically trained to deliver this program and is an approved Thrive Consultant. It’s a six to eight session training program that will help you to recognise limiting or damaging belief systems and change them for good.


So what is a "Limiting Belief System"?

 

Well it’s any set of beliefs that can have an incredibly negative or damaging effect on your life - causing you to suffer - for example - relationship problems, ill health, phobias  fears and anxieties, and even mental and physical illnesses. This training program has helped people with problems such as clinical depression, M.E., post viral fatigue syndrome, obsessions, low self-esteem, phobias, and thousands of people who needed help to stop smoking.

 

It is also excellent for those people who maybe are unable to take on Analytical Hypnotherapy - maybe they are not well enough, unwilling, or possibly just don’t have the necessary time where time is an important issue (Such as just before a holiday). It's for those people who are desperate to get control back in their life but for some reason would not get through Analytical Therapy.

 

Overview of the Programme..

 

The following is a "typical" schedule for my 7 Session programme:

 

Session 1  - Thorough discussion as to the principle differences between the Thrive Programme method and that available through Pure Hypnoanalysis and other Psychological Interventions. We will carry out some Rudimentary personality profiling and discuss how the programme works. You will be given some specific reading to do in prior to the next session

Session 2  - Review of the first two chapters, which focus on what belief systems actually are (and the key belief systems that “limit” your potential- Self Esteem and Social Anxiety) and how those belief systems can create a kind of “tunnel vision” which stops you seeing the “true picture”. We will also be discussing your “Cognition” or “thinking”, particularly what we call your “inner voice” and how this can often help keep you “locked-in” to a particular limiting belief system. 

Session 3 – Here we will discuss your “personality type” which was formed in your earlier years. Your personality was influenced by the environment in which you grew up as well as how you may have personally interpreted events that you observed or experienced. This is a key step as your personality type “gives rise” to the types of thinking styles that you are most likely to adopt (discussed later on in the course) and which also play a major part in limiting your potential. We will also discuss your “Locus of Control” which is a measure of “how much control you believe you have over the things that happen, and you want to happen, in your life.”

Session 4 -  In the fourth session we will take a detailed look at the “thinking Styles” that you have adopted that are linked to your personality type. We will discuss how these thinking styles can be viewed as “safety behaviours” and how in fact they hinder rather than help you! We will also be taking a detailed look at Anxiety and Stress and how they can have a very real effect on your immune system.

Session 5 – In this, the last of the “knowledge Acquisition” sessions, we will be taking a more detailed look at some KEY elements of belief systems, including PERSPECTIVE, NORMALISATION, DISTORTED THINKING and other factors which may be keeping your belief systems stuck where they are. Finally, to give you a chance to link all that you have learnt about yourself so far, we will discuss some conditions where Limiting Beliefs play a major role in perpetuating those conditions.

Session 6 – We are now entering the part of the programme in which we show you how to start making FUNDAMENTAL changes to you limiting beliefs and thinking by discussing the effects of the “DREAM” technique. A practical tool for helping you to “switch” limiting beliefs into empowering beliefs. 

Session 7 – Finally, in this last session, we go a step further in helping you to develop and whole new management system for your thinking and show you techniques for building self-esteem and continuing to manage negative thoughts and thinking.
