What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Clinical Hypnotherapy is the combination of a therapeutic tool, for example Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, with the altered state of Hypnosis.

One of the reasons that it can be so effective is that when a person enters into the state of Hypnosis they are more easily able to access past experiences that may still be influencing behaviours today.

Hypnotherapy is particularly well suited to helping people deal with problems that contain lots of emotions, or have a high “affective” impact on their day-to-day lives.

The reason for this is that Hypnosis can help a person become aware of the direct connection between any particular thought or memory, especially those emotions that seem to arise for no reason.

Contrary to popular myth, when a person experiences Hypnosis in a relaxing and therapeutic environment, they are in no way sleeping or in some sort of trance where they let go of control.

In fact, a person experiencing Hypnosis is MORE aware of their immediate surroundings and therefore hypnosis is better described as a heightened state of awareness rather than a state of reduced awareness!

What is Clinical Hypnotherapy Like?

If you decide to follow a course of Clinical Hypnotherapy with Joan, what can you expect to happen?

During sessions you will most likely be sitting in one of our therapy chairs, probably with your feet up on a footstool, and for most people wearing a set of headphones which combines Joan’s voice mixed in with relaxing music.

Some sessions may require you to talk about memories or feelings that come up during therapy and some sessions require nothing more than for you to listen and imagine certain things.

Every person and every person’s problem’s are unique, so sessions are tailored to suit you individually.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions of clinical hypnotherapy that you might need to overcome your problems depends on a number of factors:

  • The nature of the problem you are consulting for.
  • The length of time you have had the problem.
  • Your previous experiences with therapy.
  • What your expectations about recovering are.
  • How much effort you are prepared to make to be part of the solution.

On the whole, the majority of problems that people consult for can usually be improved in 6 to 10 sessions spaced over a number of weeks.

There are, of course, some clients who get relief in just 4 sessions whilst there are some clients who go on to have 20 or more sessions before they feel able to stop therapy.

Everybody experiences problems in their own unique ways and in reality it is impossible to be prescriptive about how much clinical hypnotheapy will be effective in individual cases.

Overall, the final number of sessions that you have will be determined by yourself and whether or not you feel a sufficient amount of relief.

As an ethical practice, it is our aim to help you gain relief from your problem in as few sessions as possible and NOT to keep you in therapy any longer than you feel is necessary.

What Problems Can Clinical Hypnotherapy Help?

Like other talking therapies, clinical hypnotherapy involves nothing more than your therapist and yourself discussing your problems, and how you might be able to make sense of your experiences in more useful ways.

There are very few mental health problems where hypnotherapy may be less useful than, say, CBT, but some people may find the idea of letting-go and relaxing with their eyes closed a bit daunting, particularly those with a high desire to be in control.

Clinical hypnotherapy is no different to other types of therapy in that it is not magic in anyway and cannot ‘cure’ problems in the same way that medicines can cure infections.

All therapies bring about change by helping clients to change themselves, NOT by making clients change through some sort of influencing power.

Hypnotherapy seems to be very well suited to anxiety related problems, particularly many of the fears and phobias that people suffer with.

Many people also find that hypnotherapy sessions are helpful for managing the symptoms of their problems, for example depression sufferers often find hypnotherapy helps then to feel more motivated to get out and be active.

Overall, it is important to be fully aware that clinical hypnotherapy, like any other form of therapy, does not cure mental health problems; relief from problems is brought about by how clients change the way they think about their experiences and emotions.
