What is Counselling?

Being self-aware and having the capability to think and feel emotions with clarity and understanding is part and parcel of being human. Unlike most animals, our thought processes rely on far more than instinct alone.

Because of this, there is scope for the way we think to become a problem and to affect our emotions. The term can mean different things to different people, but in general it is a process people seek when they want to change something in their lives or simply explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.

People may choose to speak to a counsellor because they feel they cannot speak to their others about such personal issues, or they may simply wish to speak to a professional with an objective viewpoint.

In this sense, counselling may simply provide a person an environment where they can ‘off-load’ some of their concerns without necessarily looking for a solution as well as offering more formal tools and techniques to learn how to cope or change those problems.

Types of Counselling Therapy

Clinical Hypnotherapy

Clinical Hypnotherapy is a brief type of counselling therapy that aims to help a person to identify and then use previously ‘unknown’ inner-resources and skills that may have been forgotten. Hypnotherapy taps-into a person unconscious mind and helps to either eliminate or change any unhelpful feelings or impulses that may be leading to negative behaviours in the present time.

Changing Limiting Beliefs Programme (CLB)

The Changing Limiting Beliefs Programme is a 10 session structured ‘training’ programme for the mind. It is built around the concepts that what we believe can have a very significant impact on what we experience and feel. It involves determining the range and extent of our individual Limiting Beliefs and then provides tools and techniques to change those into more useful ‘perceptual models’ so that we can experience events in a more useful way. CLB is offered by Paul at our clinic.

Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT)

Brain Working Recursive Therapy was created by Terence Watts and is a unique, highly developed form of ‘content-free’ psychotherapy designed to help somebody suffering with a problem to ‘eliminate’ the neural connections to those original emotional experiences and thus free themselves from the associated symptoms. Joan is a founder member of the British Brain Working Research Society (BBRS).

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT looks to combine both cognitive therapy and behavioural therapy in order to tackle the thought process and the resulting behaviour. Focussing on the present, CBT is a practical therapy that aims to break down problems into smaller, more manageable issues. This therapy is especially useful for those with more specific problems as it addresses each emotion separately.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is typically used to treat issues that originated from trauma, however it is starting to be used more widely for issues such as depression and anxiety. The therapy involves recalling the distressing event/feeling while following the therapist’s finger as it moves from side to side. The aim is to reduce the intensity of these memories over time.

One of the oldest therapies used in psychology, it was Freud who founded the psychoanalytic technique. The therapy takes a different approach to behavioural and cognitive therapies as it perceives our thoughts and emotions to be out of our conscious control. Instead, psychoanalysis believes any psychological issues stem from childhood and need to be addressed in order to be resolved.
